Immunization initiative program files, 1977-1980.

Correspondence, press releases, steering committee minutes, reports, data sheets, and related materials documenting Minnesota's immunization initiative program, part of a national initiative announced by the U.S. Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW) in April 1977. The initiative, scheduled to run for 30 months, was precipitated by decreasing childhood immunization levels against poliomyelitis, measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping cough, and the increasing threat of serious disease outbreaks. It sought to raise immunization levels to a minimum of 90% and ensure a system whereby these levels would be maintained.

In March 1972 President Richard Nixon called for an "intensive study" and requested a plan for developing a "safe, fast, and efficient nationwide blood collection and distribution system." Nixon's request was the result of several independent events and initiatives throughout the late 1960s that focused on the U.S. lack of an efficient system for maintaining a sufficiently ample, risk-free national blood supply.
